Many women experience spotting in the first 15 weeks of their pregnancy. Usually, the spotting or bleeding that occurs during early pregnancy is lighter in flow than a menstrual period. Spotting is common during pregnancy especially in the first trimester of pregnancy. Most of the women who experience spotting during early pregnancy go on to have a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby. So, don't get panic if you notice spotting during early pregnancy.

Light Bleeding or Spotting in Pregnancy

Spotting is considered a few drops or a slight amount of vaginal bleeding which is red, pink, or brown in color. If you saw a few drops of blood in your panty then it is considered as Light Bleeding or Spotting. It is lighter in flow than a menstrual period. Although light Bleeding or spotting during early pregnancy is very common which is experienced by many women but if you're experiencing any bleeding in the second or third trimester of your pregnancy then it can be a cause of concern. In such a situation call your doctor immediately. If you're also experiencing spotting or light bleeding in the first trimester of your pregnancy don't get panic. Just contact your doctor and tell him about your concerns and describe what you're going through.

Implantation Bleeding

When the fertilized egg attaches to the uterine lining it triggers spotting or light bleeding in the early days of pregnancy. Not all pregnant women experience Implantation Bleeding. It is just light bleeding or spotting and is different from the menstrual period. If you're also experiencing spotting during early pregnancy you don't need to use a sanitary pad. Implantation Bleeding lasts for a few days and will stop on its own.






Miscarriage

Usually, miscarriages occur in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy. If you're experiencing bleeding during early pregnancy with symptoms such as severe back pain, severe or mild abdominal pain, cramping, fluid, or tissue passing from the vagina then it can be the symptoms of early pregnancy loss


Excess physical activities

Doing excess workouts or any other physical activity can cause spotting or light bleeding during early pregnancy. To prevent the problem of spotting in early pregnancy avoid doing excess physical activities. 




Ectopic Pregnancy

It occurs when a fertilized egg attaches itself outside the uterus. Light Bleeding, Heavy Bleeding, or Spotting can be a symptom of an ectopic pregnancy. If you're experiencing any bleeding along with mild or severe abdominal pain, faintness or dizziness then it can be an ectopic pregnancy.


Lifting heavy items

Lifting heavy items can also cause spotting or light bleeding during early pregnancy. Avoid lifting heavy items during early pregnancy to prevent spotting or bleeding during the early pregnancy.

Sexual Intercourse

Sexual Intercourse is also one of the reasons due to which a pregnant woman experiences spotting in early pregnancy.

Spotting or Light Bleeding during the second trimester of pregnancy can be caused by the following reasons:


  • After Sexual Intercourse
  • Cervical Exam
  • Cervical Polyp (Cervical Polyps are small harmless tumors that grow on the cervix)

  • Placenta Previa
  • Miscarriage






Spotting Reasons during the third trimester of pregnancy

Spotting or Light Bleeding during the third trimester of pregnancy can be caused by the following reasons:


  • After Sexual Intercourse
  • Cervical Exam

If you're experiencing Spotting or Light Bleeding during late pregnancy it can be due to the bloody show which is a sign that Labor is going to start very soon.

How to manage spotting or light bleeding during pregnancy?

Follow these tips to manage your spotting during pregnancy:


  • Take proper rest.
  • Avoid lifting heavy items.
  • Stay hydrated.
  • Avoid doing excess physical activities.



Whenever you experience any bleeding or spotting from your vagina during your pregnancy period just talk to your doctor and tell all the details which you're experiencing to your health care provider. Emergency medical care is necessary for the safety and well-being of you and your baby.
